About Lake Samish
Lake Samish is located just 6.5 miles southeast of the city of Bellingham, Washington. Lake Samish is the picturesque lake to the West of Interstate 5 when travelling between Mount Vernon and Bellingham, WA. Lake Samish is used for recreation during the warmer months by local residents and is open to the public through the Lake access areas. Lake Samish shoreline is home to many home options that cover a variety of areas for home buyers looking for waterfront homes. Lake Samish is bordered on the south by Blanchard Mountain and on the north by Chuckanut Pass. Public access is limited but there is a really nice Whatcom County Park open to the public for swimming, picnics and launching a boat. Lake Samish Park. The park is located just beyond the small bridge and along the northern shore, try visiting the link for lots more information about this great spot for warm weather recreation.
Lake Samish is comprised of two basins which are connected by a narrow strait. The west arm is a small deep bay, and the east arm is a larger shallow bay. There are several small creeks that flow into the lake, including Lake Creek, Barnes Creek and Wefer Creek. Lake Samish flows out to Friday Creek, which leads to the Samish River. The Samish River supports one of the best King Salmon runs in the Puget Sound area which in turn makes Lake Samish an important part of this link. The Northwestern Shore of Lake Samish is home to Lutherwood Camp and Retreat Center which has been located on the lake since 1946, and is a large player in the Samish community. Camp Lutherwood located off of Roy Rd, sits on the shores of a second smaller body of water just beyond the bridge and Lake Samish Park.
In pre-Colonial days, members of the Samish tribes lived at several sites on Lake Samish. The Lake is often confused with Sammamish Lake which is farther south near the city of Seattle, WA
